Zinc is an inherent part of the earth’s crust and is naturally present in soil, rock, water and air. It is an essential trace element for humans, animals and plants.
Zinc protects steel from rust and corrosion. Mixed with other metals, zinc can be cast in a myriad of shapes and sizes. Zinc is used in automotive, household appliances, electronics, building and construction, industry machinery and consumer goods, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, rubber, ceramics and paint.
In 2008 2.2 million tones of zinc were produced in Europe. Zinc is fully recyclable. 95% of the zinc available for recycling in Europe is recycled. Zinc is a durable material. Zinc-containing products can last with little or no maintenance from 10-15 years in cars and household appliances to over 100 years in the case of zinc sheet used for roofing.
Zinc is a sustainable material in modern society.
